Driver’s Education Information
90 minute parent/teen driving program dates for the 2024-2025 school year will be September 25th and February 24th at 7pm in the JFHS Auditorium. Please remember that parents/guardians AND teens have to be in attendance. Doors will open at 6:45 and we will start right at 7pm. If your teen can have their license BEFORE March 1st we suggest you come to the September 25th date.
Licensing process:
- Students can get their learner’s permit when they turn 15 years old and 6 months. (They don’t have to take the classroom portion first).
- Students have to pass Driver’s Education and have a minimum of 36 seat hours in the classroom (can’t miss more than 5 driver education classes).
- Students have to hold their learner’s permit for a minimum of 5 months.
- Students have to have driven a minimum of 30 hours with parent/guardian (these hours must be logged).
- Students and parent/guardian MUST attend the 90 minute parent/teen driving program.
- Students MUST be comfortable driving.

Q: How old does my student need to be to get their LEARNER’S PERMIT?
A: 15 years and 6 months old; they DO NOT need to complete Drivers Ed prior to taking the learners permit test
Q: How old does my student need to be to get their DRIVER’S LICENSE?
A: Minimum of 16 years and 3 months old and has held their learners permit for 9 months
Q: What is an “orange card”?
A: The orange card is the completion of course certificate that their teacher will issue them in January. They need to make sure they don’t lose this! It’s super important and if they don’t have it they won’t be able to sign up/complete behind the wheel.
Q: When can I sign my student up for Behind the Wheel?
A: When your student has held their LEARNER’S PERMIT for a MINIMUM of 5 months, driven at least 30 hours with parent/guardian, attended the 90 minute parent/teen driving program, confident in driving and passed Driver’s Education Course with ALL their seat hours. (Cost $262)
Q: How do I sign my student up for Behind the Wheel?
A: Once they have completed all the requirements they can come see Mrs. Dooley or Mrs. Comrie in room 2003E to pick up an application to bring home, fill out and return.
Q: What is the 90 Minute Parent/Teen Driving Program?
A: As of July 2022, students and their parent/guardian(s) HAVE to attend one of the 90 minute parent/teen driving program offerings. Our offerings for 2023-2025 school year will be September 25th 2024 and February 24th 2025 from 7:00 pm-8:30 pm in the Auditorium
Q: Does my student have to have “Seat Hours” for Driver’s Education?
A: YES, ATTENDANCE IS KEY!!! They have to have a minimum of 36 seat hours. PLEASE make sure/Try not to schedule appointments during classroom weeks.
