ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR RISING JUNIORS

As rising juniors, you will have several opportunities to apply for specialized programs this year.

The Susie G. Gibson Science and Technology Center (GSTC) is a career and technical school which serves students enrolled in each of the three county high schools.  Students can participate in a variety of programs that will prepare them for a career/technical field.  GSTC offers programs in Auto Technology, Auto Body, Bio Tech, Early Childhood Education, Teachers for Tomorrow, Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, Construction, Electricity, Forensics and JROTC. It is also the location for GHSA (Governor’s Health Sciences Academy) which includes Emergency Medical Telecommunications/Responder, EMT, Forensics and Bio Technology, Certified Nursing Assistant, Practical Nursing, Pharmacy Tech, Intro to Health and Medical Sciences and Medical Terminology. Some programs are college dual enrolled. Please check out this Google Slide for information on these courses, including a video from each teacher. Applying does not lock you in or require you to take the course, but it gives us a way to follow up with you and provide you with more information.



The Central Virginia Governor’s School for Science and Technology (CVGS) is for rising juniors interested in a rigorous academic program focusing on science and math.    Applications will be available online in early December.  The application window opens in early January. Sophomores are invited to attend a CVGS Program Overview Night in mid- to late January.  CVGS applications are due to counselors in mid-February. Students accepted into CVGS will spend ½ the day at CVGS and ½ the day at JFHS. For more information on CVGS please contact the JFHS counseling office at 525-2674. The CVCC Early College Program is for rising juniors interested in an opportunity for academic acceleration.  In a college atmosphere, qualified juniors and seniors will complete their last two years of high school at the CVCC Bedford Center or the CVCC Forest Center. At the end of two years, students will earn an Advanced Studies Diploma from JFHS and an Associate’s Degree in General Studies from CVCC.    There will also be an open house for both programs in early January. The Lynchburg Regional Governor’s STEM Academy is for rising juniors interested in science, technology, engineering and math.  In mid-February there will be an informational meeting at CVCC’s main campus.  Applications for the STEM Academy will be available early December and are due in early April.  Students that are applying for the STEM Program must take both the English and Math Placement tests before April 1st.  For more information on the STEM Academy, please contact Patricia Sawyer in the Counseling Office at 525-2674 x21564, Susan Cash, Director of the STEM Academy, at 832-7731 or visit the XLR8Academy.com website.
