Attendance

ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES

As followed by Bedford County Public Schools

Absentee Procedures

Students who are absent from school must provide a valid excuse signed by a parent/guardian or doctor’s excuse upon returning to school.  Upon the student’s return from his/her absence, an excuse is to be brought to the attendance office.  Students who do not bring a note within five days of returning to school will be marked unexcused.

After 10 excused absences by parental note; a doctor’s note will be required.

Check in for Students / Excused and Unexcused Tardies

Students coming in late must report to the attendance office for a tardy pass into class with a written note from a parent/guardian or a doctor’s visit excuse.  The note from the parent/guardian will be evaluated and a determination made as to whether the tardy will be excused or unexcused.

Students returning from the Governor’s School and dual enrollment classes must sign in at the attendance office.

Early Dismissal Procedures

Students who need to leave school early must bring a written note signed by a parent or guardian to the attendance office before 8:55 am.  The request will be evaluated and a determination made as to whether the early dismissal will be excused or unexcused.  The student is to present the early dismissal slip given by the attendance office to the teacher at the time of the early dismissal.  Parents should make phone calls for dismissals only in the case of emergencies.  Students will be released only to a parent/guardian or a parent’s designee noted on the student’s emergency card.  The school secretary shall flag the emergency cards of students with special custody arrangements or students who are to be released only to a particular parent or guardian.

In case of an emergency, a student will be released to his/her parent/guardian.  If the parent/guardian cannot pick up the student, the student may be released to a person the parent/guardian has designated in writing or by phone.
