“What lies behind us, and what lies before us are but tiny matters compared to what lies within us.”
-- Ralph Waldo Emerson

Welcome to a great adventure for you and for me. As I begin my fifth year teaching at Jefferson Forest High School and my 31st year teaching, I am looking forward to sharing that with all of you. Aside from being and husband and father of three grown children (you have probably met my son, who is an ITRT here at Jefferson Forest), this past year I became a grandpa as well. I am happy to share with you that my second grandchild is due in October, so you will be part of that celebration with me as we share our lives together.

I dearly love teaching English as it has taken me all around the United States and the world. Seventeen years of my teaching journey has been in Asia, Saudi Arabia, and Denmark. Stateside, I taught in Texas, Kentucky, and Virginia. I still find variety and freshness to this career, and much of that has to do with the unique personalities that populate my AP classes (specifically, this year - AP English Language and Composition and AP Research). As we explore the world of rhetoric and research we will learn the skills of any English class as well as the life lessons of learning how to read the world around us. It has always been my goal that we learn how to consume media rather than be consumed by it. This may come from my previous career as a newspaper journalist, but I believe it is a skill every thoughtful citizen needs to have. I look forward to diving into discourse even deeper with all of you this year.

For optional summer work, please see the attached file.
For more detailed information about your class, see the attached syllabus

We will be dependent on technology to store and disseminate information and communication in written and oral form throughout the course.
Individual class codes will be posted as soon as the final teaching schedule has been determined. For further information about the class, please click on the syllabus for either AP English Language or AP Research.

Codes Needed: (Please note that these codes will be determined once schedule has been determined. Codes will not be posted publicly so students will need to email me after June 30, 2020. At that time Google Classroom sites, remind codes for each period, and AP Class codes will be given.)

Feel free to email me with any questions this summer:
