r 2023-2024 Opportunities Preparing for College Guide & Workbook

Completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form allows you to be considered for federal student aid. In addition, states and colleges use FAFSA information to award their own grants, scholarships, and loans. But, since aid is limited, you have to meet the deadlines! Check out the Federal Student Aid website for more information.

WHAT STUDENTS CAN DO NOW TO PREPARE

  • Prior-Prior Year (PPY) Tax Information: The 2024-2025 FAFSA will use 2022 tax information for students and their families to determine eligibility for federal student aid. They should ensure that this information is completed and accessible.
  • All students and parents contributing to the FAFSA will need a FSA ID. If they don't already have one, they can go here to create an account.

FAFSA Assistance Available for High School Seniors

FAFSA completion rates are down in Virginia almost 10% from this time last year. To address this urgent need for students and families in Virginia, Virginia College Access Network (VirginiaCAN) and the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) are partnering on a statewide effort. Four college access organizations have banded together to offer one-on-one FAFSA assistance.

Starting March 15th, students and families can go to www.virginiacan.org/fafsa (Links to an external site.)

Schedule a meeting, and you will be connected with an access provider from Access College Foundation, ECMC’s The College Places, GReat Aspirations Scholarship Program (GRASP), the Virginia Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (VASFAA), or the Virginia College Advising Corps (VCAC).

Though the service is open to all, we especially want to help low-income, underrepresented, and first-generation students in particular.  This is a first-time collaboration of these organizations meant to address disproportionate effects of the pandemic.
